What Does Life After Retirement Look Like? Script: (008)
Most people don't take a trip and not plan what they will do once they arrive. Typically, the plan is mapped out ahead of time…even if it's just a time of R&R.
You should apply the same principle to your retirement years. Once you reach that momentous day…what do you plan to do?
Are you retiring from something, or are you retiring to something? Your retirement will probably be more gratifying if you have a clear vision of the next chapter of life. For some, a season of rest may be gratifying. For others stopping what you love may be daunting.
Here's a simple exercise that might help.
First, list the things your retirement will allow you to stop doing. Then write down a level of emotion that brings. 5 – overjoyed. 3 – Neutral. 1 – Anxiety or sadness.
Second, make a list of the things you want to start doing. Will any of these items fill the gaps of anxiety or sadness from your previous list?
If so, you may be good to go. If not…dream a little. Consider things like traveling, spending more time with family, learning a new skill, volunteering, or consulting.
Managing retirement expectations is essential financially...and significant emotionally to help you enjoy your retirement years to the fullest.
