What is your marketing personalty…and why does it matter?

It was the day for our leadership team to come together for our annual retreat. During this phase of my life, I owned a textile company, and I had hired a consultant to help us understand how to work better as a team.

The first step was to take a personality test. At the time, Myers Briggs seemed to be the most popular. I can't remember the letters assigned to me when the results were complete, but I remember this.

One member of our leadership team was often misunderstood… he came across as arrogant, demanding, and insensitive at times. However, when his results were announced, one member said… "Wow… you're not a jerk after all. I now see why you make the decisions you do."

So what's my point?

Although you probably have taken a personality inventory like DISC, StrengthsFinder, Myers Briggs, etc., do you know your marketing personality? In my work with Financial Advisors and their teams, I typically find that everyone falls into one of four categories:

  • Adventurous Marketer

  • Inspiring Marketer

  • Dependable Marketer

  • Deliberate Marketer

Why does this matter? You will probably frustrate your team if they don't understand which category you fall in. Or they might frustrate you if you don't understand their marketing personality as well. You also might frustrate yourself if your marketing plan is Deliberate, but your marketing personality is Adventurous.

I've always encouraged advisors to find a sustainable strategy. Too often, we start and stop because we run out of gas…or our strategy doesn't align with our personality, and we lose interest.
